Sarah Venn, instructed by Alison Millar of Leigh Day, represented the family of Michael Maguire at the inquest touching upon Michael’s death.

Michael was a Ranger in the 1st Battalion, The Royal Irish Regiment, and had served in Afghanistan.  In May 2012 he was having a break in a safe area whilst on a live fire tactical training exercise at Castlemartin Ranges, Pembrokeshire, when he was struck by a round fired from a General Purpose Machine Gun on an adjacent range, sustaining fatal injuries.  The jury heard that civilians on Freshwater West beach also had been within the weapon danger zone due to an incorrectly positioned target.

Although a number of the military witnesses exercised their right to not answer questions which were potentially self-incriminating, the jury found that Michael had been unlawfully killed.
