James Duncan-Hartill and Richard Sumarno promoted to Joint Practice Directors

Hardwicke is delighted to announce that James Duncan-Hartill and Richard Sumarno have been promoted to Joint Practice Directors and heads of the Practice Management Team with immediate effect.

James and Richard have spent many years in developing client relationships, and working alongside Hardwicke’s barristers in collaboration on their careers and opportunities.  They have played a lead role in our domestic and international business development over the years. Clients commend James for being “a joy to deal with, responsive and pragmatic”, and say of Richard that he “develops strong working relationships from the outset”.

Amanda Illing, Chief Executive Officer says of their promotion: “I am really thrilled for James and Richard as they take on their new senior roles which they both thoroughly deserve. They are exceptional professionals and a pleasure to work with. They share our values, energy and ambition for the future.  I can’t think of two better people to work alongside in the exciting years ahead for our chambers, especially as we move to our new premises in Gray’s Inn in the summer of 2021.”

Brie Stevens-Hoare QC and PJ Kirby QC, Joint Heads of Chambers agree: “Richard and James are an essential part of Hardwicke’s continuing success and we are very proud of their achievements. It is good when we can nurture and develop our talented individuals, and their new roles will enable them to develop our excellent client service even further.”

Richard said: “I am delighted to be given this opportunity and I look forward to continuing to push chambers forward and to build on our recent successes.  Hardwicke is home to many excellent barristers in their fields.”

James agrees: “It is a privilege to work with people you admire – including clients, barristers and staff.  We have big plans for the future and Richard and I are looking forward to being part of that on-going success story.”

Richard joined Hardwicke in 2013, James in 2014, both following working for other leading London sets.
