Hardwicke Building’s Inaugural Social Housing Conference.

Hardwicke Building held its first annual Social Housing Conference on Tuesday, the 28th of April, at The Lincoln Centre, London. Supported by leading publication Inside Housing, the event was a great success giving delegates the opportunity to participate in discussions relating to policy and the law.

The day began with a rousing address from Grant Shapps MP, Shadow Housing Minister, putting forward his ideas for reform before taking part in a thought-provoking question and answer session.

His address was followed by Naomi Goode, Partner, Lewis Silkin discussing The Tenant Services Authority while Hardwicke Building’s own Dean Underwood dealt with the active management of empty dwellings.

After lunch The Experts’ Panel considered many topical issues relating to social housing. Philippa Ward, the Commissioning Editor of Inside Housing was joined by John Gallagher Principal Solicitor with Shelter Legal Services, Daniel Skinner of Batchelors, Kate Davies, Chief Executive of Notting Hill Housing and Alastair Redpath-Stevens from Hardwicke Building.

Richard Blakeway, Director of Housing for the Office of the Mayor of London spoke next outlining many of the housing challenges in London.

The day finished with an informative talk by Hardwicke Building barrister Kerry Bretherton. Speaking on impact of Doherty and Weaver, Kerry assessed the relationship between public and private law.
